Tread Lightly? On What Planet?

4 Mar 2007

OK, so this one blew my mind. I went to read the Tread Lightly! newsletter in my inbox and discovered that this stellar organization, who has labored for years to teach us reduce our impact while hiking and camping and so forth, is now carting around its dog and pony show with an H2, pulling a 20-foot trailer. So, natch, the Hummer logo is now all over Tread Lightly's educational materials. Very apropos.

But wait, there's more! Just below the article about the Tread Lightly! Hummer love fest is the blurb about how API, the largest oil and gas trade organization, is also sponsoring the Tread Lightly! road show. Those guys really know about low-impact use!

I don't mean to denigrate the work that Tread Lightly! has done over the years, but really, this seems extremely inappropriate, like asleep at the wheel kind of inappropriate. I mean, I understand that maybe they needed equipment or whatever, but this whole setup sends the wrong message about responsible use of our lands

Can't miss the Hummer logo here! »
