My Land's Not for Sale
7 Aug 2004
I just shot off a couple of letters to Sens Domenici and Bingaman. Apparently, the Bush administration is encouraging the BLM to sell off their land to increase revenue flow. What? Aren't the oil barons paying enough for pumping oil? Isn't Anheuser-Busch paying enough for its grazing permits (or JR Simplot, or any of the other agribusinesses who hold most of the leases)?
Why should we lose our public lands because the corporate users aren't paying their fair share? And speaking of buying our public lands, check out the article about the FS in California falsely claiming that certain endangered species habitat was destroyed by wildfire, so it can be auctioned for logging? What the heck? I thought they had a brilliant, workable, collaborative plan for forest restoration just 4 years ago. Or maybe that was just my fevered imagination....
