Don't get me wrong- I think trees are great. In fact I think all plants are great. Plants are the coolest! I eat them all the time.

I just don't like to be around them when they grow out of control all over the place. I get very claustophobic around forests, especially pine forests. Especially pine forests that also have plants growing all over the ground. Those are the worst. Strange things happen in the woods, you know.

My ideal landscape would include earth, sky, and enough wind to drive a person crazy, the way it blows and blows and the roof rattles and the chinks in the windows howl, and the dust sifts in, and the wind blows...

And I like rocks a lot too. Rocks are great the way that they exist so long that you are just a tiny blink to them. Nothing takes as long as geologic time. Rocks come in an interesting variety, too.

So being in forests makes me nervous. I was up in Idaho and it made me mad! We were cruising around up and down mountains, and I couldn't see anything! Then we would hit an area that had been clear cut, because Idaho is a big-time logging state, and I would have a fantastic view,

It sort of shook my ideal of myself as a radical environmentalist, that I was grateful for clear-cut areas so I could get out of those intimidating trees for a while.

And don't get me started on Oregon. There's plants growing everywhere there. Literally everywhere you look. It made me glad that I do my part as a vegetarian to eat as many as possible. It felt very hostile to me.

When I got to southern Utah toward the end of that trip, I breathed such a sigh of relief. Not a tree in sight, just some cactus and lots and lots of particularly nice rocks.

So you people who like trees, stay in your creepy forests. I'll be here listening to the wind blow.

If you tell me you hate me for this, believe me, I will understand.
