Antelope & Mexicans Suffer for Immigration Policies |

Oct 10, 2004 By Queenellen
Ok, I was looking for news about the election, but this caught my eye. All the public lands on the Mexican border are suffering– INS agents chasing around drug smugglers, crushing poor endangered little tortoises under their wheels and careening into saguaros. Cabeza Prieta is one of the worst, because that whole section of AZ is so wide open, yet so super convenient to I-10, take a right to Tucson, left to LA. Whereas, if you cross into Big Bend, where are you? Texas! Ain't nowhere to go from there, brother. Poor tortoises, poor antelope, poor immigrants. The best quote's right at the end."The solution to the border problems is not on the border; it's in Washington, D.C., and Mexico City." (refuge manager Roger Di Rosa).
